Indian outsourcers spared by tsunami

Major offshore IT facilities such as Cognizant, Infosys, Perot Systems, Syntel, Wipro, and Xansa are housed in Chennai (formerly Madras) on the SE coast of India in Tamil Nadu. It has also been blessed to have business continue as usual in the wake of the Boxing Day earthquake and tsunami.

Wachovia Securities has reported no meaningful financial impact on offshore IT operations or communications in Chennai because of the twin tragedies. The wave traveled as far as a quarter of a mile inland in the region but affected mostly the fishing industry and hotels.

It even goes on to say that numerous Indian IT and call center workers have even contributed to the relief operations by making use of their leaves and weekend breaks.

In conclusion, the Wachovia report says that even with the level of readiness and earthquake-handling already achieved by offshore facilities, the year-end tragedy could contribute to the growing list of disaster recovery and planning questions.
