Finding the right mix

Aside from costs savings, access to valuable skills not present within the company is a primary motivation when it comes to outsourcing.

A recent survey of fifty IT directors, from among FTSE-ranked companies, showed that costs savings remain the primary reason for adopting any form of outsourcing.

But those who are already into outsourcing, which comprised two-thirds of those interviewed, mentioned access to skills as a primary reason.

This can indicate two general schools of thought - those who outsource to reduce costs (such as systems maintenance) or those who outsource requirements that the company cannot inherently serve.

The traditional modes of outsourcing tend to jive with the first one. But based on the survey (and how IT directors described their current managed services contracts), companies now go into outsourcing for both reasons.

Aside from looking for innovative ways of reducing costs, companies also want to maintain high levels of service by choosing the right partners to help them achieve.
