A Look to the Philippines for Offshore Outsourcing

When North American companies consider outsourcing for technology and business process related services, it is usually India that is first considered. This makes sense. India offers a great educational system, a stable government, and a large English speaking population.

The Philippines however is beginning to bring a case for more offshore outsourcing contracts. Proctor and Gamble chose the Philippines to serve its operations in Asia because of the current technology infrastructure, the English language skills, the low cost, and because the people are very customer service minded.

Politically, the Philippines is hoping to change its image. In the past, its leaders, including Imelda Marcos and Joseph Estrada, have brought poor publicity to the country. However, current leader, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo seems very inclined to business development efforts.

Among her recent efforts to support offshore outsourcing in the Philippines have been to push for deregulation and privatization in the telecom and the power-generating industies.
