Examining Web Services Strategy

For people in the technology community, web services has been buzzing lately. Buzzing for the past couple of years, however, buzzing like one of those gnats, that you can't quite see.

According to a report by IDC that buzzing sound is real. In fact, a swarm of about 3,300 web services projects are currently in development. The total expenditure on these projects will be close to 1 billion dollars.

Companies that are hoping to reap a honey pot from this marketplace need to have a strategy. For project development teams, some best practices to keep in mind are:

  • Don't bet everything on web services!
  • Leverage near-shore and off-shore application development/management services resources whenever possible. Remain competitive and take advantage of lower-cost resources.
  • Build on top of business process or vertical expertise.
